In April 2003, Patrick Davey was asked to go to Uganda and help start Mountains of the Moon University as Vice Chancellor. He arrived in November and launched into the many tasks required to found a University from scratch.
By the end of January 2004 the team had identified premises for the University and filed the paperwork with the National Council for Higher Eduacation. Finances were very tight consisting of some money raised in Uganda and the rest before leaving Ireland.
Patrick had to return home for an operation for cancer but this potential catastophe turned into a blessing in disguise. On the basis of a 30 minute conversation a supporter donated €50,000 and about nine months later he found a friend who gave $100,000. These funds were absolutely critical to the existence of the university. The same individual has since raised another €400,000 cash and €400,000 for a building. Without this support MMU would not exist.
Having finally satified the paperwork requirements of the NCHE, the University opened its doors in August 2005. Since then the University has grown and thrived. In September 2008 the first 100 students graduated in a range of disciplines and their employment record is very positive.
Donations made the project possible, donations form an important part of the current budget and your donation is essential for the long term health of the University.
