Master of Public Administration MPA and Management – Blended Distance Learning

Overview
The MPA and Management program is aimed at those whose ambition is geared towards leading public service management and innovation. This degree design helps the university achieve its goal of blending the quality of a superior program with the flexibility necessary to meet the needs of working adults. It prepares students to serve as managers in the executive arm of local and national government, and increasingly non-governmental organizations (NGO) and nonprofit sectors, by placing a focus on the systematic investigation of executive organization and management. The MPA and Management program combines curricular structure, physical facilities, and real-world fieldwork opportunities to foster the managerial skills needed to meet today's greater demands for accountability and effectiveness from public and nonprofit organizations. Emphasis is placed upon learning those administrative concepts, processes, and techniques that are associated with managing the public's business. The program blends the theoretical with the practical dimensions of administration and encourages a broadened academic and professional perspective. It also provides an understanding of the role of public administration in social and political contexts. The demands of work, family, and other obligations leave little time for traditional graduate studies.  For this reason, we have made the MPA and management program more flexible and accessible.

Why choose an MPA and Management?
There is a range of management educational programmes available to choose from for today’s prospective student. However, a Master of Public Administration and Management degree focuses on developing leadership skills within a public sector context, making graduates more competitive in the marketplace. The Master of Public Administration (MPA) and Management program is the preferred graduate degree for public sector managers and supervisors.  Working adults are well aware that career objectives are likely to be improved with advanced education. The MPA and Management program at MMU has been designed to challenge and develop the next generation of leaders in public management and policy.

What does the programme deliver?
The MPA and Management themes include an emphasis on:

  • Leadership development – including enhanced interpersonal skills, confidence, resilience and clarity about public service values
  • Performance tools and approaches – a solid grounding in the key ideas and techniques every senior manager needs to be familiar with
  • Seeing the bigger picture and making local sense – understanding institutional renewal, policy discourse and processes, social and economic trends
  • Networks and partnerships – being ‘professionally multilingual’, working collaboratively across boundaries.

What is in Master of Public Administration (MPA) and Management?
A core curriculum of a typical MPA and Management program usually includes courses on microeconomics, public finance, research methods / statistics, policy process and policy analysis, ethics, public management, leadership, planning, and program evaluation/performance measurement. Instruction includes the roles, development, and principles of public administration; public policy management and implementation; the relations between organizational management and legislators; the public and non-profit budget processes and financial management; administrative law; personnel management focusing on civil employees; professional ethics; and appropriate research methods, in order to equip MPA and Management graduates with skills and knowledge covering a broad range of topics and disciplines relevant to the public sector. The cross-disciplinary research and teaching strengths inform the course design and provide an intellectually rigorous, relevant and applied learning experience

Applying to the MPA and Management Program
Entry onto the MPA programme is by application and admission. Students are expected to have:

  • A first- or second-class degree, or a qualification deemed to be equivalent, or passes in three of the MPA courses (one of which must be a core course).
