Introduction
This Course is intended to meet the increasing demands of the Ugandan and East-African financial sector for well-trained branch- and middle managers to provide microfinance services and expand the range of products, particularly to meet the demand of rural populations. This course attracts both local and international students in the region.
The curriculum for this course is founded on three thematic “pillars”;
The Microfinance (MF) customer - the course draws on the latest literature (“Portfolios of Poor”) to understand the use of MF services by low-income-households. Moreover, it draws on the comparative advantage of working closely with the school’s department of social and community development and the university’s school of agriculture to impart students with a profound knowledge of the profiles of rural households, communities and their agricultural enterprises.
Organizations – theoretical background, evolution, strengths and weaknesses, legal/regulatory and policy context, growth potential of different organizations providing MF services.
Applied knowledge - principles of economics and economic development, banking and finance, aspects of group formation and dynamics, accounting, loan cycle and portfolio management, liquidity and financial management, operations and controlling.

Program structure
The instruction of course units under this course involves lectures, tutorials and practicals. Each course unit is evaluated using the Credit Unit (CU) as the weighting unit. A Credit Unit is equivalent to 1 Contact Hour (CH) in each week of a semester for a particular course unit. A contact hour is related to Lecture Hours (LH), Tutorial Hours (TH) and Practical Hours (PH) as follows;
A given intake for this course runs for 2 years with each year consisting of two semesters (17 weeks) and a 10 weeks recess term. The minimum and maximum course load per student per semester will be 15 and 25 credit units respectively.

CGPA calculation
The following procedure is used in calculating the cumulative grade point average;
Calculate the grade point average for each course independently using the table in 6.2 above.
Using the results in 1 above, calculate the cumulative grade point average for courses taken in a semester using the formula;
n
Σ GPAi x CUi
i = 1
CGPA =
n
Σ CUi
i = 1
Where;
CGPA is the cumulative grade point average for a given semester
GPA: is the calculated independent grade point average for a given course in 1 above
CU: is the credit unit for a given course as indicated in the schedule of courses in 6.0 below
The final cumulative grade point average is an average of calculated grade point averages for all the 4 semesters allotted to the course.
Course Progression
Progression of a student is classified as normal or probationary.
(i) Normal Progress
Normal progress occurs when the student has passed all required subjects. This happens when the student has passed each course with a minimum grade point of 2.0.
(ii) Probationary Progress
This is a warning stage, and occurs if;
1. A student fails a course
2. A student obtains a Cumulative Grade Points Average (CGPA) of less than two (2) at the end of any semester.
Re-taking a course
There are no supplementary examinations in the semester system. When a student has to re-sit a course, he/she has to wait and re-sit that course, without penalty, when it is offered again. However, the student will have to pay the examination fee i.e. 10,000 Uganda shillings for Ugandans or USD 15 for non Ugandans. This fee may be revised from time to time. A candidate can retake a course in order to;
Pass it if he/she had failed it
Improve the grade obtained when it was previously done
When retaking the course;
a. The student will redo the continuous assessment and end of semester examination
b. The academic transcript shall indicate that the given course was retaken
Discontinuation
A student is discontinued from the program if one of the following conditions occurs; -
Withdrawal from the program
Tuition can only be refunded to a student who withdraws from the program not later than 4 weeks after commencement of the academic year. Such a student will have his/her tuition refunded as follows;
