Introduction

The Certificate in Information and Computer Technology (ICT) is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions.

Course Objectives

To equip a student with knowledge and skills(both Technical and soft skills) in basic computing to help him/her succeed in securing a job and/or move ahead in IT world.

The entire period of study of this certificate program is one year.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must fulfill the following requirements to join the program:

• Sat U.C.E examination (or equivalent) and obtained a certificate in it.
  
  
• Have at least four passes one of which is English language obtained at the same sitting, or its equivalent.

Brief description of the course units

SEMESTER ONE

Concepts of Information Technology and Computing
This will give a general introduction to ICT, classification of computers, computer hardware and software, Operating Systems and Computer Architecture.

Principles of Electricity and Electronics
To give a basic understanding of electricity and electronics which are the main cornerstones of computer power? To display that advances in computer power are the result of advances in micro/nano technology. To show the strengths and weaknesses of renewable energy sources powering African P.C.’s

The Internet, E-Mail and Computer Protection
This course unit provides knowledge about:

• The Nature and Characteristics of Internet.
• The History and Development of the Internet and World Wide (www)
• Connecting Computer to the Internet
• The Nature, Characteristics of an Internet Browser.
• The Network Terminology and Internet Protocols
• E-Mail Communications.
• Uploading and Downloading Files.
• Factors Affecting Communication Speed on Internet
• The different types of Computer viruses.
• Sources of Computer Viruses
• How do guard Computers or the Network against Viruses

Microsoft Office Package
The course unit provides a practical experience on how to use the Different Applications that are found in the Microsoft Office Package.
The Applications will include:

• Word processing (Microsoft Word)
• Spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel)
• Databases (Microsoft Access)
• Presentation Software (Microsoft PowerPoint)

SEMESTER TWO

Introduction to Programming Languages
To introduce the student to the basic concepts of programming languages and principles of language design. Formal definition of structures: formal description of syntax and semantics; Meta-Language; Comparatives studies of programming languages and language design concepts: structural organizations, structures for names, data abstractions, concurrency; Functional, object-oriented, and logic programming languages and concepts; Language design principles

Introduction to Computer Networks and Data Communication
To introduce the concepts, theory and practice associated with computer networks and data communication. The course provides a foundation for further studies in computer networks and data communications. Introduction to Networks: definition, advantages, types, configurations; The OSI/ISO reference model; Transmission media: magnetic media, twisted pair, coaxial, fiber-optics; Data encoding: straight, Manchester, differential Manchester, satellite; Digital versus Analog transmission; Modems, modulation and their standards, codes and pulse code modulation; Integrated Services Digital Networks(ISDN); Network Access Protocols; Passive versus dynamic allocation; LAN standards: 802.3(Ethernet), 8802.4(token bus), 802.5(token ring); Computer Network security, Active and Passive Attacks; Network layer and Network layer protocols; Transport layer and Transport layer protocols. Furthermore, the course considers problems on each layer of the multi-layered communications model, and describes some typical solutions to such problems

Introduction to  Web-Design
In this course, students will learn the basics of designing and developing a web site. We'll take a look at design issues specific to web-based presentations, learn web page layout, effective navigation and delve into the design process. We examine some of the how use graphics, color and fonts on web pages as well as working with tables and CSS. Some site management techniques are covered, accessibility issues and working with domains and clients discussed.

Computer Maintenance and Repair
The course will provide hands on experience for students in issues to do with Software and Hardware troubleshooting and also finding solutions to both the software and Hardware problems that computers may face.
