Students Support Services

Introduction

  • Many students find the transition from School to University difficult during the early stages.  They may be living away from home for the first time, they may be learning how to manage a very limited financial budget, they may think that the course subject matter is familiar and fail to develop a regular study habit until it is nearly too late.  There may be problems of personal relations with other students or possibly with members of staff.
  • Should any of these or other situations arise, the student should in the first instance discuss the matter with their Course Director.  If the matter cannot be resolved, the student should approach their Head of Department and if still unsatisfied, should make an appointment to meet the Assistant Registrar Academic.

Medical

  • The University has a clinic located near the Guilds’ Office.  The purpose of the clinic is to serve students’ basic health needs.  Otherwise, major and serious health needs can be met at Buhinga Referral, Virika and Kabarole hospitals.  In addition, there are many clinics in Fort Portal town that can serve students’ needs.

Identity Cards

  • All students will be issued with an identity card which they must be prepared to produce at any time on request by any member of the academic or security staff. Any person unable to show their card when requested may be removed from the University.
  • The student Identity Card remains the property of Mountains of the Moon University at all times and may be recalled in matters of a serious disciplinary nature.

Religious Observances

  • Mountains of the Moon University, because of its location within the Downtown area, has access to a number of worship places.  The following are some of the key worship sites that are within the Downtown area:  Seventh Day Adventist Church, St. Charles Lwanga Catholic Parish, St. John’s Cathedral (Anglican Church), the Pentecostal Church, the Christian Fellowship Church and the Downtown Mosque.

Sports Facilities

  • A healthy mind in a healthy body:  Though Mountains of the Moon University does not have yet its own sports facilities, both male and female students are encouraged to participate in sports at Buhinga Stadium for football; and at Mountains of the Moon Hotel, Boma for swimming.  Other sports activities such as netball and volleyball can be played at the Campus ground.  Using these facilities, students will be able to engage in community inter-sport and as well as inter-university sports.  With the opening of the Saaka campus, some of these facilities will be in place as early as the beginning of the next academic year (2009/10).

Accommodation

  • Students will be offered accommodation provided they notify MMU authorities in advance.  A student will pay UGX 160,000 per semester in the shared accommodation arrangement.  For single per semester, a student will pay UGX 280,000.  Accommodation facilities will include: running water, electricity and security.  These accommodation places are affordable and convenient for students in their study programs.  It is advisable that students use places recommended by University officials.

Students’ Guild

  • A Students’ Guild is already in place.  Among other things its work is to link the Students’ Body with the University Administration.  More importantly, the Guild exercises administrative powers over affairs that concern the students’ body.  Issues such as gowns, identity cards, medical care, hostels, are some of the major areas that concern the Guild administration.

Well-stocked library:

  • For research purposes the university has a well stocked Library with Internet connections.  Students will be able to access research materials on line and connect with other universities and other research institutions.  The library is available during the Day, Evening and Weekends.

Computer Laboratory:

  • Students will study computer as an obligatory course unit.  Students will be able to access computer services freely and at the same time access internet services at no cost.

Scholarships:

  • Students who enroll for Dip Floriculture, Bachelor of Arts with Education, Bachelor of Sciences with Education, and Bachelor of Science with Horticulture are given a partial scholarship to support them in their studies.  MMU considers all courses to be important but it started with the above courses because of the immediate need felt in the area.

Students’ Field Attachment:

  • All students at MMU on degree course are required to do a field attachment in a working environment in view of acquiring experience in their respective fields of study.  Students are supervised both by their lecturers and authorities at the site of work.   This exercise enables every student to acquire “hands on experience."

Discount on Tuition:

  • Students who pay in the first two weeks from the beginning of every semester will benefit from the 10% discount on tuition.

International Students:

  • The above category of students who do not meet direct entry requirements into our Degree courses can be admitted through our BRIDGING COURSE scheduled for May 2009.  After sitting the bridging course, an applicant should pass with at least 50%.

Why should a parent trust their child’s future to MMU?
MMU is an organization with strong leadership, right from the University’s Chancellor Prof. Edward B. Rugumayo, whose character and reputation is well known in Uganda. The Board, headed by Hon. Justice Seth Manyindo, appointed the present Vice Chancellor Dr Douglas Nisbet from the UK. Dr Nisbet brings to the University experience of the highest international standards of academic quality assurance. The University Council has a strong range of academics, business executives and local government leaders.
Other reasons why you might trust MMU as a good place to educate your family include:

  • Ethics in all courses aim to produce spiritually balanced and socially responsible graduates, without bias to individual religious beliefs – Catholic, Anglican, Pentecostal and Muslim churches are represented on the University Council.
  • The safe environment in Fort Portal allows young people to mature and develop away from the temptations of the city, whilst allowing a healthy social life in a lively town.
  • The cool climate in Fort Portal is conducive to study and loss of education due to sickness, including malaria, is very low.
  • The costs of courses and student accommodation, feeding, transport and general living expenses is much lower than the city.

Hands-on computing at MMU
In partnership with Irish NGO Camara, MMU has excellent computing facilities. All students have courses in ICT, focusing on all the skills necessary for the International Computer Driving License.

Up-To-Date Library
As a new University MMU has focused on relevant modern texts for the library.  Digital library resources are also being fully developed.
