Re-taking a Course (s):

  • A student who has failed a course unit by getting a mark less than 50% shall retake the course(s) unit during the recess period or when the course unit is offered again.
  • A student who has not taken the course unit for some reason shall also be given another opportunity to retake it during the same period.
  • A student who has failed to obtain at least the pass mark (50%) during the second assessment in the same Course(s) unit shall be warned.
  • The maximum times a student may have retakes of the same course unit are two.
  • A student may retake a course(s) when next offered in order to improve his/her Pass Grade(s) got at the first assessment.
  • While retaking a Course(s) unit a student shall:  i) Attend all the prescribed lectures/tutorial/clinical /practical/Fieldwork in the course(s); ii) Satisfy all the requirements for the Coursework Component in the Course(s) and; iii) Sit for the University Examination in the Course(s).
  • A student shall not be allowed to accumulate more than three (3) retakes at any given time.
  • A final year student whose final Examination Results have already been classified by the relevant College/School/Institution board and has qualified for the Award of a Degree/Diploma/Certificate shall not be permitted to retake any Course(s).
  • When a student has retaken a course the better of the two Grades he/she has obtained in the Course shall be used in the computation of his/her cumulative Grade Average (CGPA).
  • Whenever a course (s) has/have been retaken, the Academic Transcript shall indicate so accordingly.

Progression:

Normal Progress:

  • Normal progress will occur when the student has passed all required course units. This will happen when the student has passed each course with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.0 or 50%.

Probationary Progress:

  • A student who has obtained the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of less than 2.0 shall be placed on probation.
  • A student will be placed on probationary progress if he/she fails more than two course units taken in any given semester.  A student will be required to re-take the course units when they are being offered.
  • Such a student shall be allowed to progress to the next semester/Academic year but still retake the course(s) he/she had failed.
  • A candidate shall not re-sit the course unit for more than three times.
  • No Candidate shall be allowed to repeat the same year of study more than once.

Certificate from Due Performance:

  • A student who does not have coursework marks shall be denied Certificate of Due Performance and will not be allowed to sit the University Examinations.

Discontinuation:

  • When a student accumulates more than three consecutive probations, based on CGPA he/she shall be discontinued.
  • After retaking a course for the third time and failing to obtain the pass mark of 50%, a student shall be discontinued.
  • Gross misbehavior not conducive to the well being of the University.
  • Rules and Regulations concerning examinations shall apply here.
  • A student who has overstayed in an Academic course by more than two (2) years shall be discontinued from his/her studies at the University.

Classification of Certificate/Diploma and Degrees as proposed by the National Council for Higher Education

The classification of Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates shall be indicated by the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) as indicated below:

  • Students who pass with First Class honors shall be put on the Vice Chancellor’s list whereas students who pass with Second Class Honors shall be put on the Dean’s list.  Such students may be retained by the University as Teaching Assistants.

Awards:
The School Board, upon satisfaction that the standard required under relevant regulations for the award of a Degree, Diploma, Certificate or other award as the case may be, has been attained by a candidate in the University Examinations, shall recommend to the Senate that such Degree, Diploma, Certificate or other academic awards be conferred upon or granted to such a successful candidate.

Changing from one course to another:

A student may be permitted to change from one Academic course to another on condition that:

  • He/she satisfies the admission requirements for the Academic course applied for.
  • The student has formally applied to the Registrar Academic’s Office for the change within the first two weeks of beginning the semester.
  • A student permitted to change his/her course may be allowed to transfer the Credits from the previous course to the new course provided that the credits being transferred are relevant to the new Academic course.
  • The reasons for transferring from one course to another should not be based on disciplinary grounds.
  • A student may only start attending the new course after the transfer has been approved by the Registrar Academic.

Withdrawal from a course:

  • A student can apply to his/her respective board for permission to withdraw from studies at any time of the semester.
  • A student will be allowed only a maximum of two withdrawals in an Academic course and each withdrawal shall be a maximum of one course unit in an academic year.

Calculation of the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA):

The cumulative grade points average at a given time shall be obtained by:

  • Multiplying the grade point obtained in each course by the credit units assigned to the course to arrive at the weighted score for the Course.
  • Adding together the Weighted  Scores for the Course taken up to that time.
  • Dividing the Total Weighted Score by the total number of Credits taken up to that time.

Approval, Appeal and Publication of Examination Results:

Approval:

  • The senate has delegated the power to approve all examination results to Boards of Colleges/Schools/Institutes. But the results shall not be regarded as final until they are confirmed by Senate on submission of Appropriate Pass List to Senate by the relevant Boards.

Appeal:
.

  • Any student or candidate aggrieved by a decision of the Board of his/her College/School/Institute may appeal to the Senate Examination for reversal or moderation of the decision of the Boards.

Publication of Results:

  • The relevant schools/departments shall publish Provisional Examination Results of candidates in every examination soon after the meeting of school/departmental Examination Committee; the Examination Results shall be arranged and published in a manner as prescribed by Senate. Final publications of results are after the approval of the Senate.

Graduation Course Load:

Each College/School/Institute Board shall specify the quantity and composition of their course load requirements for the Award of the Degree/Diploma/Certificate.  The composition shall include both Core and Elective Courses.
